Assembling a top notch, engaging haunting/possession film isn't easy. In my opinion this is one of the shakiest branches of the horror tree, with far more failures than successes being produced on a regular basis. The problem, typically, seems to be the fact that filmmakers approach these projects without an ounce of creativity, fully content to feed us a choking amount of bland tropes and anticipated maneuvers. It happens so often in fact that one must wonder: is there any creativity left to be siphoned from this subgenre? Mac Carter's new one, Haunt suggests no. Now, that doesn't mean the film is a dud by default. As it is, Haunt generates a few chills, and more importantly is generally well-written. Strong, believable dialogue takes this into territory it probably never should have reached. The concise nature of a few of the personalities, and the very measured dialogue also picks up a little fawning from me as well. So many low budget films from relatively green filmmakers are completely anchored by repugnant dialogue and if you can't see a single positive float to the surface because the entire vessel is glued to floor, you just can't invest yourself in any degree of hope. But there's hope and more from Haunt. Even if it is almost staggeringly formulaic.
